The Birth of the Rattler
In February 1986, PCGS launched its original holder—now known as the Rattler. Made from two hard plastic shells with a white gasket, it lacked a sonic seal. As a result, coins could shift slightly, creating a soft rattling sound. This simple design helped establish trust and consistency in a previously unregulated market.
Why Rattlers Remain Valuable
Historical Appeal: Rattlers feature a minimalist green label and early PCGS logo. Because of this, many collectors treat them like first editions—valuing both the coin and the holder.
Grade Upgrade Potential: During the 1980s, PCGS assigned conservative grades. Consequently, a coin in a Rattler may earn a higher grade today. A one-point bump can significantly increase a coin’s value.
Market Premiums: Although CAC stickers aren’t exclusive to Rattlers, they often appear on them due to PCGS’s strict early standards. Therefore, a CAC-approved Rattler can command a premium.
